UKAS ISO/IEC 17025 accredited asbestos testing laboratory

UKAS accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025 demonstrates that our asbestos testing laboratory operates to recognised international standards for competence, impartiality and consistent, reliable results.

For our clients, this means:

  • Your samples are analysed using validated methods aligned with HSE guidance HSG248 – Asbestos: The Analysts’ Guide

  • Results are subject to robust internal quality control

  • Performance is regularly assessed via independent proficiency testing (AIMS)

Choosing a UKAS accredited laboratory is widely recognised as best practice when assessing materials for asbestos under the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012.

What is asbestos bulk analysis?

Asbestos bulk analysis is the laboratory process used to determine:

  • Whether asbestos is present in a suspect material sample; and

  • If present, which asbestos type(s) (e.g. chrysotile, amosite, crocidolite) it contains.

Typical materials submitted for bulk analysis include:

  • Ceiling and wall boards (AIB, textured coatings)

  • Pipe lagging and thermal insulation

  • Floor tiles and bitumen adhesives

  • Cement products (roof sheets, soffits, flues, gutters)

  • Roofing felts and mastics

  • Gaskets, ropes and fabrics

Analysis is carried out in accordance with HSE guidance HSG248 – Asbestos: The Analysts’ Guide, using established microscopy techniques and rigorous quality assurance procedures.

What will my asbestos bulk analysis report include?

Your asbestos bulk analysis certificate / report will clearly identify:

  • The sample ID and any location / description provided

  • Whether asbestos is detected or not detected in the sample

  • The type(s) of asbestos present, if detected (e.g. chrysotile, amosite, crocidolite etc.)

  • Any non-asbestos fibres / materials noted

Where bulk analysis supports a wider asbestos survey, results are incorporated into the inspection report and asbestos register, helping you understand:

  • Which areas were inspected

  • Which materials are non-suspect

  • Where asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) have been identified and what types they contain

We can also provide standalone bulk analysis certificates where required – for example when contractors or clients simply need to confirm whether specific suspect materials contain asbestos.

Fast asbestos sample testing turnaround times

We understand that asbestos results are often required quickly to keep projects moving and to control risk.

We offer a range of turnaround options (subject to capacity):

  • Premium 4-hour turnaround

  • Standard 24-hour turnaround

  • “While you wait” analysis at our laboratory (by prior arrangement)

All options use the same accredited methods and quality processes – the difference is simply how quickly you need your results.

How to submit asbestos samples for testing

We can receive asbestos samples for bulk analysis via:

  • 1. Samples collected during our surveys

    • Our surveyors take representative bulk samples safely and in line with HSE guidance, then transport them directly to our laboratory for analysis.

    2. Samples submitted directly to our laboratory

    • By prior arrangement, approved clients and contractors may submit sealed suspect material samples to our laboratory reception or via courier.

    • We provide clear packaging and labelling instructions to ensure samples are transported safely and compliantly.

Important: Handling and sampling of suspected ACMs should only be carried out by competent persons with appropriate training and equipment. If you are unsure, contact us and we can arrange safe sampling by one of our surveyors.

Frequently asked questions about asbestos bulk analysis

  • What is the minimum amount of material required for asbestos bulk analysis?
In most cases only a small, representative sample of the suspect material is required for analysis. The exact amount depends on the material type – our team can advise you on suitable sample sizes and how they should be packaged

  • How accurate is UKAS accredited asbestos bulk analysis?
UKAS accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025, combined with adherence to HSG248 methods and participation in AIMS proficiency testing, provides a high level of assurance that results are accurate and reliable, with appropriate quality controls at every stage.

  • Can I take my own asbestos samples?
In some circumstances competent contractors or dutyholders may take their own samples following appropriate training and risk assessment. However, improper sampling can increase exposure risks or result in unrepresentative samples. We generally recommend that sampling is carried out by trained asbestos professionals.

  • Do I need a survey as well as bulk analysis?
Bulk analysis tells you whether a particular sample contains asbestos and what type. An asbestos survey goes further, systematically assessing your building, identifying ACMs, and providing the asbestos register and management plan required by the Control of Asbestos Regulations. We can help you decide what you need based on your situation.

  • How will I receive my results?
Results are issued in a formal asbestos bulk analysis certificate / report, usually by secure email. Where the analysis forms part of a survey, results are integrated into your asbestos survey report and register.

TTL have been working directly as my analyst for the last 12 months on a very complex asbestos removal scheme, they have achieved all of their KPI’s without fail and on a number of occasions surpassed their SLA in acting for us on planning issues associated with the demolition in regard to contamination which cannot be removed as part of the normal sequence of operation.

There reports are always issued within timescales and they have policed the reports by the Licensed asbestos contractor faultlessly sometimes in very difficult circumstances.
