Your One Stop Shop For Wac Testing.
WHAT IS WAC TESTING?
WAC Testing (Waste Acceptance Criteria) is the classification of soil and waste, prior to being disposed of in landfill. This involves a series of analytical tests on the waste, to determine how it will behave when buried, which in turn is used to determine what landfill site can accept the waste being produced.
A WAC Test DOES NOT classify waste as hazardous/non-hazardous, it only classifies the appropriate landfill for disposal.
WAC Testing became mandatory for hazardous waste in 2005 and is a legal requirement for waste producers in the UK to ensure the waste they produce is classified, before being disposed of in landfill sites. The environment agency, Scottish environment Protection Agency and Natural Resources Wales have the power to issue fines to companies who are found to be breaking the rules around waste disposal, and have the power to enforce these regulations: Landfill Regulations (2005) and 2018 Waste Framework Directive.
DO I NEED A WAC TEST?
Waste is generally considered contaminated if the waste, or the material or substances it contains are harmful to humans and/or the environment.
Examples of contaminants include (and are not limited too):
• Asbestos (you can find out more about our Asbestos Services here
• Oil (such as engine oil) / hydrocarbons
• Hazardous waste containers
• Chemicals / Reagents
• Contaminants
• Pesticides / herbicides
• Battery acid
• Organic compounds
• Heavy metals
All contaminated waste requires a WAC test prior to disposal, to ensure you are disposing of your waste in the correct landfill. Waste can only be disposed of in a certain landfill site if it meets the criteria, which is achieved through a WAC Test.
There are three categories of landfill:
• Inert
• Hazardous
• non-hazardous
Hazardous landfills are more expensive than inter and non-hazardous landfills. By obtaining expert advice from TTL, you can rest assured your waste is being disposed of in the most appropriate landfill.
