Ground Stabilisation Testing Across the UK

Your one stop shop for ground stabilisation testing.

Soil stabilisation is widely used in construction and infrastructure projects to improve or modify in-situ soils so they can be used as a suitable, durable founding layer instead of being excavated and replaced. When designed correctly, stabilisation can:

Increase soil strength and stiffness

Improve workability and compaction

Reduce susceptibility to moisture and volume change

Deliver significant cost and programme savings by minimising imported fill and disposal of site-won materials

The Testing Lab PLC (TTL) provides specialist ground stabilisation laboratory testing to support lime and cement stabilisation schemes across England, Scotland and Wales.

Ground stabilisation testing for construction and earthworks

Our geotechnical laboratory works with:

  • Earthworks and groundworks contractors

  • Highways and infrastructure projects

  • Residential, commercial and industrial developments

  • Renewable energy and logistics platforms

We help you determine whether site-won materials are suitable for stabilisation, and what type and dosage of stabiliseris required to meet your specification (e.g. highways subgrade, capping, sub-base).

What is soil stabilisation?

Soil stabilisation involves treating soils with binders such as lime, cement or other additives to enhance their engineering properties. Typical applications include:

  • Formation and subgrade improvement

  • Capping and sub-base layers for roads and pavements

  • Hardstandings, yards and working platforms

  • Remediation of soft, cohesive or highly variable soils

Laboratory testing allows you to understand how a soil will behave when treated, so you can design a stabilisation specification that is robust, cost-effective and buildable.

Preliminary stabilisation trial mixes

We offer preliminary laboratory trial mixes tailored to your project and specification. These trials allow you to:

  • Assess different stabiliser types (e.g. lime only, lime + cement)

  • Optimise stabiliser dosages

  • Evaluate strength, stiffness and volume change characteristics

  • Confirm whether stabilisation is a viable alternative to dig-and-dump

Trial mixes can often unlock substantial savings by demonstrating that on-site materials can be successfully treated rather than disposed of as waste.

Ground stabilisation laboratory tests we offer

We provide a clear, structured approach from enquiry to final report:

  • Moisture content

    • Determines the natural water content of the soil.

    • Essential for assessing suitability for compaction and stabilisation, and for understanding moisture conditioning requirements.

    Compaction testing (2.5 kg / 4.5 kg)

    • Establishes the dry density / moisture content relationship and optimum moisture content (OMC).

    • Used to set target densities and moisture ranges for on-site compaction.

    Vibrating hammer compaction

    • Alternative compaction method often used for coarser or more granular materials.

    • Helps define achievable density where standard compaction methods are less representative.

    Moisture Condition Value (MCV)

    • Provides a rapid indication of a soil’s suitability for compaction at its current moisture content.

    • Useful for day-to-day decisions on whether materials are in a workable state for placement and compaction.

  • California Bearing Ratio (CBR)

    • Measures the bearing capacity of treated or untreated soils, subgrades and capping materials.

    • Used for pavement design and earthworks validation (often including soaked CBR to reflect worst-case moisture conditions).

    Soaking and swelling measurement

    • Assesses the volume change and performance of soils and stabilised materials when exposed to water.

    • Critical for expansive or shrink–swell-prone soils and for assessing durability in wet conditions.

Results are reported clearly, with the key parameters highlighted for designers, earthworks specialists and asset owners.

How our testing supports your project

Our ground stabilisation testing can help you to:

  • Decide whether to stabilise or replace site-won materials

  • Optimise stabiliser type and dosage for performance and cost

  • Provide the data needed for geotechnical design and earthworks specifications

  • Support method statements, quality plans and IAN / DMRB-type requirements

  • Demonstrate compliance with project specifications and relevant standards

We can also work closely with your designers and contractors to develop target criteria, test schedules and acceptance limits appropriate to your scheme.

Frequently asked questions about ground stabilisation testing

  • Why do I need laboratory stabilisation trials?
Laboratory trials allow you to test different stabiliser types and dosages under controlled conditions, so you understand how your soils will behave before committing to a site-wide specification. This reduces the risk of under- or over-design and helps avoid costly changes once works are underway.

  • What information do you need before starting trials?
Typically we’ll ask for: project details, proposed stabilisation thicknesses and layers, target CBR or strength requirements, anticipated stabiliser types, and any relevant specification or standard you’re working to. Basic soil classification data is also helpful.

  • How much material do you need for testing?
The required sample volume depends on the number and type of tests and trial mixes. As a rule of thumb, stabilisation trials often need multiple representative bulk samples. We can advise on sample quantities and help you plan sampling on site.

  • Can you help interpret the results?
Yes. As well as issuing formal test reports, we can discuss the results with your geotechnical designer, contractor or client to explain what they mean for stabiliser choice, target values and site controls.

  • Do you offer site testing as well as laboratory work?
We can combine laboratory stabilisation testing with wider geotechnical testing and, where required, support site-based earthworks testing through our network of partners and local operatives.

TTL have been working directly as my analyst for the last 12 months on a very complex asbestos removal scheme, they have achieved all of their KPI’s without fail and on a number of occasions surpassed their SLA in acting for us on planning issues associated with the demolition in regard to contamination which cannot be removed as part of the normal sequence of operation.

There reports are always issued within timescales and they have policed the reports by the Licensed asbestos contractor faultlessly sometimes in very difficult circumstances.
